Residents deliver thank-you cake to workers

Members of the campaign group Mill Road 4 People and other local residents delivered a thank-you cake to contractors working on Mill Road Bridge on Thursday evening.

MR4P Chair Paul Lythgoe said

Tonight we had a good crowd of lovely people. Young and old representing the best of our local community gathering to give thanks to the workers who will be out in the cold tonight making Mill Road a safer and better place to be.

The cake – a chocolate sponge with vanilla buttercream – featured pictures of a bus, a pedestrian, and a cyclist, with the words ‘Thank you for your work’.

After facing hostility and obstructive behaviour from some opponents of the bus gate, workers were understandably wary as the group walked over the bridge, but were delighted when they realised that they were there to support them.

It’s great to see the work actually going ahead at last. We have waited a long time for this and are very grateful to the County Council and the contractors for their determination in seeing it through.

A small demonstration by pro-car activists was taking place on the other side of the working area, but there was no meeting or confrontation between the groups. Mill Road 4 People calls on those protesters to accept the democratic will of local people and to work together for improvements that will benefit both residents and traders.
