Romsey By-Election -Candidate Views

Following the resignation of City Councillor Mairéad Healy, a by-election is happening in Romsey on Thursday 12 September. We asked all 4 candidates for their views on the current Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) which will if approved restrict traffic passing over Mill Road bridge. The TRO is currently in a consultation period.

Here’s what they said. And the results of this election can be viewed here: https://democracy.cambridge.gov.uk/mgElectionAreaResults.aspx?ID=292&RPID=127024526

GARDINER-SMITH, Beth (Labour Party)

The new consultation on the Mill Road Bridge TRO is currently live and it’s important that all residents have their views heard. Whilst this is ultimately a County Council decision, I support the proposed bus gate as one part of a wider strategy to improve the Mill Road area for all. Mill Road is unique in Cambridge for our independent shops and special culture in the heart of a residential area. As a City Councillor I would work with residents and businesses to support continued improvements to ‘green up’ Mill Road and make it the safe, accessible and attractive destination for all in Cambridge

KARIMJEE, Zak (Green Party)

I agree with the Green Party’s stance of strong support for the restriction of private motor vehicles from crossing Mill Road bridge. Crucially, it has strong support from local residents, who believe it will improve the place they live in. Additionally it will encourage people to choose active travel or public transport over driving, which is great for the planet, people’s health and our community. As a local resident I hope it will make Mill Road a safer & nicer place for pedestrians by reducing traffic and the challenges of pavement parking in the area.

I also think it’s vital to work with local businesses who might be affected by these restrictions – for example, by arranging early morning hours for delivery vehicles to restock shops. The key aim of reducing traffic on Mill Road won’t be harmed by some common-sense adjustments to help things work for everyone.

NELSON, Rob (Conservative Party)

We have tried to contact Mr Nelson but have not yet received a response. We will update this page as soon as we receive one.

WALSMLEY, John (Liberal Democrat Party)

I am in favour of the scheme and believe that it is supported by a majority of local residents. I support the TRO ‘Statement of Reasons’ document, including the statement ‘Mill Road suffers from high levels of through traffic, which combined with local traffic and the high number of pedestrians and cyclists, causes significant congestion, particularly at peak times, and an unpleasant environment. Air pollution and a poor road safety record are directly related to these issues.’

I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of the new consultation and have been encouraging people to participate, whatever their opinion on the matter. If the Bus Gate goes ahead it will be important to bring all of the Mill Road community together to gain the maximum benefit from the closure. As a City Councillor I will advocate for investment in the Streetscape of Mill Road and continuous improvements in public transport and cycling infrastructure are made. It is important to keep a focus on the ambition to reduce the overall level of traffic and improvement in air quality across the city.
